Although many people do no realise it, and many more choose not to see, we are currently living through one of the greatest humanitarian catastrophes in recent times. Hundreds of thousands of people are fleeing bombs, torture, rape, war and death and searching for a safe haven in Europe. The challenges are huge and European governments have varied wildly in their response to this crisis, some opening their borders and arms in welcome and others erecting razor wire and turning away from vast amounts of human suffering.
Refugees in Europe has been created as a hub for the latest news, views and information on the refugee crisis. I’ve been volunteering in Lesvos since early 2014 and I intend to keep working with refugees, in Greece and beyond, for the foreseeable future and I want to share my experiences and knowledge, as well as the expertise and observations of others. Refugees in Europe is a space for factual, unbiased writing, a resource for volunteers and refugees alike and a corner of the internet to discuss more personal experiences of this refugee crisis.
We live in a world that is drowning in information and sometimes it’s hard to sort fact from fiction, especially when the media willfully distorts the truth in pursuance of private agendas. Refugees in Europe is an attempt to counter that as, quite frankly, the stakes are too high.
